Protest Skirt

We started this project wanting to celebrate Dutch culture and traditions. But during our research, we discovered something uncomfortable: the Netherlands often remains silent when facing global injustice, especially when political or economic interests are involved. This realization changed our focus from national pride to critical reflection.

We found inspiration in the “Feestrok’’ (National Liberation Skirt), originally made after World War II using fabric scraps from the clothes of loved ones to celebrate freedom. We reimagined this skirt as a counter-map, where each patch represents a moment when the Netherlands looked away from global injustice : from colonial violence to modern trade deals that exploit others.

Through interviews and participatory research, we collected real stories and historical examples that are literally stitched into the fabric. Some patches include small pockets holding written testimonies waiting to be shared. The result is a wearable statement (specifically meant to be worn during protests) that invites viewers to confront the uncomfortable reality of Dutch inaction and question their own role in breaking the silence.
