In the 80s, claiming territory was a response to social exclusion. It was a way to assert presence and strength. This insight remains relevant when looking at how gentrification affects locals in Rotterdam today. The city's "strong shoulders" policy attracts highly educated, wealthy residents to strengthen the economy, but displaces long-term residents who are a historic part of these neighborhoods.

"Sterke Schouders" is a short film I conceptualized and directed about two people trying to claim each other's territory. Tino is a typical Rotterdammer: gabber, Feyenoord fan, claiming his space loudly with his boombox. Lola is a young American transplant claiming territory through her perfect aesthetic life and matcha rituals: the archetypal YUP who can't understand or accept someone like Tino.

The film follows their contrasting relationship from the day she moves in until something bigger forces a shift. By targeting two opposing audiences who relate to these extreme personalities, the film opens conversation about gentrification without taking sides.
